Who we are

ASUM is an entirely student-led organization advocating for positive outcomes for the 76,000 students of the UM System. While we work with the administration on many issues—like funding for higher education—we are not formally affiliated and answer ultimately to our fellow students. Lobby lawmakers, executive agencies, and administrators.

Hear what former ASUM interns had to say!

Quotation Mark

As a former lobbyist turned Social Chair, ASUM has transformed my way of thinking. I never really was into public policy or had much knowledge about it. Through ASUM I was able to make a change for not only myself, but fellow UMSL students. I got to shake the hands of those in charge and noticed quickly there was something missing, people like us. As an intern I was able to be a voice forthe voiceless and stand up for student rights. ASUM is more than just another organization, but a movement.

Quotation Mark

I served as a lobbyist for ASUM during the 2019 Regular Legislative Session, later becoming the Legislative Director for two consecutive years. This experience led me to become a lobbyist for the largest trade association in Kansas and the United States, where I managed legislative operations, PAC fundraising and compliance, and grassroots advocacy. Through ASUM, I also formed close friendships that continue to be important in my life.

From the leadership to the student collaboration to the congressional interactions, the ASUM internship was a great experience! It provided me with an opportunity to see the government operate up close. I believe it is important for constituents to feel connected to their officials, and ASUM is an organization that makes such a connection possible. The internship is an incredible in my opinion, a necessity if you look to enter into the world of politics!
